The Departments aims:

design work

Design and Technology prepares students to participate in todays and tomorrow's rapidly changing technological world.

  • Through Design and Technology, all students can become critical and informed users of products, and become designers and innovators.
  • Students will learn to think and do something creative to improve the quality of life for everything.
  • Design and Technology is about students becoming self-motivated, creative, problem solvers and allows them to work both as individuals and as members of a team.
  • Students will look for needs, wants and opportunities and respond to them by developing a range of design ideas and by making and evaluating products and systems.
  • In Design and Technology students will combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetics, social issues, environmental issues, function, and industrial practices.

    Design Technology at Thomas Becket Catholic School is accommodated in a purpose built, spacious, sweet of rooms comprising of 2 workshops, 2 graphics rooms, food technology room and a CAD/CAM room. The department as a whole is well equipped and well funded.

    dt4 classroom In Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 pupils follow courses in Graphic Products, Food Technology and Resistant Materials. At KS 4 pupils are given the choice of subjects from across the school.

    Design Technology subjects have attracted good numbers of pupils from across the ability range. A new addition for 2009 at KS4 has been a Level 1 qualification in Horticulture aimed at those pupils who may wish to follow a more vocational route in education

    KS5 offers pupils the opportunity to follow a course to AS/A2 in Product Design.
