The Departments aims:
Maths is a core subject and is studied by all students to GCSE level. There are six Maths classrooms.
Key Stage 3
Years 7 – 9 have 6 one hour lessons every fortnight. Our aim is to develop every student’s mathematical ability through experience and use of mathematics in a variety of situations. The course is divided into four main areas:-Three of these topics are tested every term by means of a formal written assessment. Throughout the terms pupils are assessed by their Teachers through their class work and homework.
Key Stage 4
Years 10 – 11 have 7 one hour lessons every fortnight. All students follow the AQA Modular GCSE course. Module 1 is taught from the end of Year 9 until November in Year 10 when the students sit their first GCSE Modular examination. The content of this Module is Handling Data and is 18% of the final grade.The next Module examination is sat in June of Year 10. The content of this Module is Number and Algebra and is 27% of the final mark.
The third and final Module is sat in June of Year 11. The content of this Module is Algebra, Shape and Space and is 55% of the final mark.
A grade is awarded based on the total of marks from all three Modules.
